Natural Beekeeping: Organic Approaches To Modern Apiculture

This one day workshop provides an introduction for folks interested in small scale and part-time (hobby) beekeeping.  Ross will present a balanced view of natural and organic beekeeping topics and practices including: location and equipment requirements; basic honey bee biology; swarming as an expression of the bees vitality; presence and mindfulness in the beeyard; non-toxic pest and disease control; and an appreciation for the role that pollinators and beekeepers play within the Earth's ecosystem. Don’t be fooled by the fall date – it’s the best time to prepare for a spring start!

Ross Conrad of dancingbeegarden.com  learned his craft from the late Charles Mraz, and his son Bill Mraz. Conrad is a former president of the Vermont Beekeeper's Association, a regular contributor to Bee Culture - The Magazine of American Beekeeping, and author of Natural Beekeeping: Organic Approaches To Modern Apiculture published by Chelsea Green. Ross has given bee related presentations and led organic beekeeping workshops and classes throughout North America for many years. His beekeeping business, Dancing Bee Gardens, supplies friends, neighbors, and local stores with honey and candles among other bee related products, and provides bees for Vermont apple pollination in spring.

Permaculture is a rapidly expanding global movement to help build resilient communities in the face of peak energy and climate change. Permaculture, short for permanent agriculture or permanent culture, is a broad based sustainable blending of our communities with the natural ecosystems.

This two-day workshop will combine classroom and field work to touch on a broad range of relevant topics tailored to the interests of the participants and relating specifically to the workshop site.
We will explore working definitions of permaculture, discuss the history and ethics of the movement, and outline basic permaculture principles as they are applied to real world situations. General site analysis techniques will be discussed with a focus on how permaculture strategies and techniques can be applied in both rural and urban locations.

An outline of the weekend activities and a list of recommended lodging, for those traveling, will be provided for all who attend.

Autumn Harvests for Winter Medicine: Roots, Bark & Berries

$65 (includes supplies)

Autumn Harvests for Winter Medicine: Roots, Bark & Berries

Before winter takes hold, we have this last opportunity to gather the herbs that will keep us healthy into the next season. In Autumn, herbal roots, barks, and berries are at their peak. We'll venture into the garden and forest to visit healing wildflowers and trees, and you'll learn how to identify, harvest, and process these plants from start to finish. We'll make birch and pine needle tea, echinacea root tincture, wild cherry bark honey, elderberry syrup, and root tonic vinegar. The class will include demonstration and hands-on remedy making (you'll see how easy they are to make!) and samples of the finished remedies from our day's adventure.

Maria runs Wintergreen Botanicals www.wintergreenbotanicals.com  in the pine forests of New Hampshire and devotes her life to teaching people the beauty and power of backyard medicine. She's worked with herbs for 15 years and has studied at the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine, Lichenwood Herbals, Sage Mountain, and Heartsong Farm. She sees clients, teaches extensively, and is a freelance writer and health editor for Herb Quarterly magazine. Maria is also the founder and coordinator of the New Hampshire Herbal Network www.nofanh.org/herbs, a nonprofit group of more than 100 local herbalists dedicated to promoting herbal education, connecting, and supporting the vitality of herbalism in the state.
